The CERN Relay Race: Details

Stages Course Categories Registration List of Teams

Date: Thursday 14th May 2008, starting at 12h15.

Stages: 1000-800-800-500-500-300 metres

The 6 runners in each team should belong to the same professional unit (division, group, experiment, firm). However, there is an Open category for other teams.

This is a fun event, you don't have to run fast to enjoy it. The times for the course range from under 11 to over 17 minutes, and around 50 teams usually take part.

Course: routes Bohr, Pauli, Einstein, Arago, Powell, Gregory, Bloch, Bohr

The race starts inside of gate A at the junction of routes Bohr and Scherrer, leaves CERN through gate A, goes along the parking on the outside, then enters gate B and follows the routes Pauli, Einstein, Arago, Powell, Gregory, Bloch, and Bohr.
The finish is on route Bohr, close to the start. Different from previous years, the race will not go into route Greinacher, but finish straight on route Bohr. The distance of the last leg is the same as before, but the slightly confusing turn at the very end is avoided.
The changeovers are marked on the road by three parallel lines with numbers between them that give the lengths of the corresponding legs. The changes must take place between the first and the third line. The five changeovers are

  1. 1000m - 800m: route Einstein, near building 275
  2. 800m - 800m: route Arago, near building 582
  3. 800m - 500m: route Gregory, near building 226
  4. 500m - 500m: route Bloch, near building 101
  5. 500m - 300m: route Bohr, near building 208
